NOTE: I'M NO LONGER USING XFRACTINT, BUT I'M LEAVING THIS PAGE ON MY SERVER FOR
ARCHIVAL PURPOSES. UPDATE: June 9, 2002 - Xfractint binary re-compiled with nasm-assembler support, which allows Xfractint to generate the mandel and julia types much faster.
UPDATE: June 4, 2002
CHANGES This new version also includes the fractint.doc file, which I left out of version 20.1.12.
Only 2 map files are in the 20.2.04 source, so I have pulled out all 144 map
files that are installed in the official version and put them in a seperate file. This is not an official release of Xfractint!! This is only a pre-compiled package of all the files needed to run Xfractint 20.2.04. The source code hasn't been modified. This version was compiled and runs on the following systems:
Mandrake Linux 9.0, 9.1, and 9.2 This version should run OK on any recent or newer versions of Mandrake Linux or Redhat Linux, with a fairly recent kernel and Xfree86. Instructions on how to install and run this package, along with some hints and tips on running Xfractint, can be found on this page, and in the download package.
I received a report a while ago from a Debian user that Xfractint runs fine on the Debian distribution. But you
need to install the termcap-compat package because Debian's ncurses file includes termcap. Alternately, if
you don't have root privleges on your machine, you can remove the "-ltermcap" from the end of the following
line in the Makefile: LIBS = -L/usr/X11R6/lib -lX11 -lm -lncurses -ltermcapOf course, you will then have to re-compile Xfractint from the source code. I once had a report from one person that Xfractint needed a library called "libncurses.so.5". He had a difficult time finding that library file, and I ended up sending it to him. If you get an error message similar to this:
xfractint: error in loading shared libraries: libncurses.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directorythen I would suggest that you download the file called libncurses5.tar.gz. (See list to the left.) When unzipped and installed, it will install the library file and three links pointing to it. The original source for Xfractint 20.2.04, along with some older, and any newer versions, are available from the Fractint Development Team Homepage. The source for Xfractint 20.2.04 is also now available here on my Website. (See list to the left.)
